Relax to the Max is a chair
massage company founded in Toronto in 1993 by
Canadian massage therapist, Eric Brown. The
company didn’t start as Relax to the Max,
however, and the name has some interesting
history.
Like many before him, Eric
Brown was introduced to chair massage by David
Palmer’s organization which was known as On
Site Enterprises at the time. Like Palmer,
Brown wanted to see massage used by the masses.
And Palmer’s approach seemed to be the perfect
vehicle – a truly accessible massage service.
Brown brought chair massage
to Canadian corporations immediately and was one
of the first to do so. His company at the time
was called Take Ten.
Relax to the Max as a
trademark was born in 1997 when Brown, prompted
by demand for chair massage services, got
together with two highly respected massage
educators, Nancy Patel and Stacey Fishman, to
develop the unique Relax to the Max chair
massage training program.
The trio polled people to
find out what words first came to peoples’ minds
when they heard the word “massage”. The winning
words were “relax”, “relaxation” and “relaxing”.
Since relaxation is the first thing that people
think about when thinking of massage, why try to
fight public perception, Brown reasoned.
So the name Relax to the
Max was coined. And not because anyone named Max
was associated with the company. But simply
because it beautifully describes the biggest
benefit that people derive from chair massage.
Does the name work for a
company that also continues to do on-site
massage in corporations? After all, do companies
really want their employees to relax to the max
when they should be working?
“I’ve had one student
suggest that we change the name to Relax to the
Medium,” says Brown with a chuckle, “but
companies seem to be just fine with Max.”
